Module 7

Local Anesthesia

2.5 AGD/PACE CE Hours

Profound anesthesia sits at the heart of everything we do as dentists.

In this module, you’ll review injection techniques, troubleshoot stubborn teeth, and learn how to manage common issues like failed mandibular blocks. Knowing you can get a patient numb does wonders to reduce stress for both your patient and you.

Improve local anesthesia predictability by mastering injection fundamentals, supplemental techniques, maxillary and mandibular blocks, troubleshooting, pharmacology, and complex clinical scenarios.

Fundamentals & Supplemental Techniques

+
Understand injection fundamentals including needle gauge, aspiration, and proper anesthetic delivery technique.
+
Demonstrate safe needle re-capping techniques for clinical safety.
+
Deliver more comfortable palatal and mandibular infiltrations and know when they are appropriate.
+
Describe and demonstrate PDL and interseptal techniques and their clinical applications.
+
Use papilla injection and pain-control concepts to make anesthesia and exodontia more comfortable.

Blocks & Troubleshooting

+
Competently use palatal nerve blocks including greater palatine and nasopalatine blocks.
+
Describe and demonstrate PSA, ASA, and AMSA blocks for maxillary anesthesia.
+
Understand and demonstrate maxillary V2 block approaches when broader anesthesia is needed.
+
Use ICPAT and mental nerve block techniques as supplemental anesthesia options.
+
Perform Vazirani-Akinosi and buccal nerve blocks with a more predictable approach.
+
Describe Gow-Gates and IAN block techniques including less conventional IAN approaches.
+
List why mandibular blocks fail and how to limit those failures.

Agents, Reactions & Complex Cases

+
Recognize allergies and adverse reactions, including methemoglobinemia triggers and management considerations.
+
Understand tachyphylaxis and infection-related anesthesia difficulty and how to overcome poor anesthesia.
+
State the cause and management of temporary facial nerve paralysis.
+
Recall useful carpule and anesthetic agent facts and select the appropriate anesthetic for a given procedure.
+
Discuss articaine properties and applications including the controversy around lower blocks.
+
Describe and apply topical anesthetic options including proper application and custom-compounded agents.
+
Understand Oraverse® and anesthetic pKa including appropriate use and dosing considerations.
+
Understand onset time and buffering and how they affect anesthesia effectiveness.
